Anatomy of Horror
Film Typography
2023

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project was part of the 12th Annual Pop Up Type Museum at Emily Carr University. The brief was to create an exhibit display about the art of typography itself. I chose to focus on the typographic conventions of the horror film industry, researching the history of the genre and what factors influenced the trends in typographic treatments over time.

The display included five posters, a looping compilation of the opening sequences of different horror movies playing on a vintage tv, and an interactive activity for guests to try handlettering their own horror typography.

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

Test out your horror hand lettering skills and transform this mundane grocery list into something sinister without changing the words themselves, only the way they are written. Recreate the whole list, one item, or anything in-between. Write directly into the book, or paste your rendition in once it’s finished. Feel free to rip, crumple, and ruin the pages.

THE LIST:
Milk
Eggs
Tomatos
Broccoli
Garlic
Green onions

Chickpeas
Earl grey tea
A sweet treat
